Poem 24

To K. C. as I float in the ocean

Dear Kate,

I am no solitary soul
But I am awake now.
I’ve read your words over
And over, they sing to me
As the prickling chill of summer
Slurping away sunscreen from my chest.
I am no solitary soul but I’ll never
not know what I know now
Free to stretch my limbs outward and
Take flight from the horizon with the gulls
Forgive me, for resenting my newfound
Agility, for with great reason comes
greater haste.
