This poem plays with the brain’s inclination to fill in what it wants to read. Watch closely and see if you don’t find yourself accidentally reading a line the way you want it to be.
Inquiring lovers pressed closely by hand
Both imprinted by fingers in sugarlike grain
The sky is reflecting a compacted place
And love letters between them etched breathing on glass
To be read again sweetly with a whispered haste.
The sky is reflecting a compacted place.
Whose image is rendered not vainly for love
But of desperate unrequited emotions above
Her peacock of maidens protecting from sun
And ever apologizing her haphazard sin.
The sky is reflecting a compacted place
Freckles of blue mimic divots of green
Less weightier pilings ask forgiveness for greed
And all will be rendered so helpless to seed—
The sky is reflecting a compacted place
Come spring; until then each will wear the same face.
