Poem 106

We left with a bargain

Two for the price of our free time
Barely enough time I discuss finances and we were dog owners
At first it was precarious
Where to put them sleeping
What to reward and punish
How to make them behave
But slowly they became our dogs
Wandering blankly toward the curves of our arms
Our dogs to reward and cherish
Ours to coddle ours to coo
It was the way they looked at us
No longer motivated by food
Instead by respect
You are the giver of love, safety
My teacher, my keeper my friend
But as they slumbered
I would look out on them I’m the evenings, whisper quiet as a thought
No, darlings, you are the keeper of me
